If we want to be healthy, researchers suggest doing the things that make us happy. Happy emotions, they say, can make us live longer, feel better, and even slow the aging process itself.

The problem is that in the modern world, we don’t know how to be happy. Thanks to our materialistic culture, we’ve lost our way. And many of us no longer know how to find our way back. Fortunately, we have science as our guide. Researchers probing the question of happiness now have a much better idea of what brings us joy. And their findings will shock you.

Engaging Fully

Have you ever been in a state of flow while doing something, such as writing, singing, or playing music? It’s like time ceases to pass and you’re completely absorbed by what you’re doing. In some cases, the outside world literally disappears and you can no longer hear birds singing in the garden or children playing across the street.

Being fully-engaged, researchers claim, changes our state of consciousness. Instead of getting depressed about the past or worrying about the future, we’re totally absorbed by our moment-to-moment experiences. Other thoughts don’t matter, because what we are doing right now is fully engaging us.

Feeling Good

Feeling good isn’t just about pursuing hedonism. That’s part of it. But it’s also about cultivating your mind and body in such a way that you always feel good.

For instance, meditating all day is fine. But if you’ve got a bad back and haven’t been to the chiropractor, then it will become an unpleasant experience.

Feeling good requires both doing pleasurable things and allowing yourself to fully indulge in the sensations. It also means changing the way you think about things. Life has to become less serious for you to enjoy it.

Doing Good

Lastly, doing good could also boost your health. It turns out that people who act in accordance with their nature improve their sense of life satisfaction. They also experience greater levels of the hormone, oxytocin, which helps to promote a sense of wellbeing throughout the body.

Things That Won’t Make You Healthy Or Happy

There are, of course, many things that we think will make us healthy and happy, but don’t.

One is money and material possession. We think that we can buy our way to a sense of joy, but practically everyone who tries this fails.

In some ways, being rich is a curse. We don’t know what to do with all our newfound wealth. And we wind up spending it on things that actually hurt our health in the long run.

Children are another thing that we believe will bring us happiness, but, invariably, do not.

Children are a source of joy and fulfillment. But many parents find that financial pressures and marital strife degrade their wellbeing. They wind up arguing all the time. And life just isn’t as happy-go-lucky as it once was. Many parents wind up spending their free time napping, watching TV, or spending time alone, trying to recuperate. When this happens, both their mental and physical health suffers. And they just don’t feel the same as they did before they got together.
