Is the Keto Diet Safe for Kids?

The Ketogenic diet is a high-fat and low-carb diet that many people are following. It aims to induce ketosis, a metabolic process during which people use fat for energy. This keto diet meal plan cuts out refined foods and has many health benefits.

Is the Ketogenic diet safe for kids? Surprisingly, the diet was originally developed for children. Initially, it was a therapeutic aid for kids who had epilepsy. It is still used in hospitals and is very effective. The Ketogenic diet is perfectly safe for your kids. The Diet Includes Foods Kids Love
The Keto diet includes eggs, bacon, smoothies, meats, and cheeses. It’s easy to take meals that your children eat all the time, such as pizza, chili, sandwiches, and enchiladas, and make them Keto-friendly. All it takes are simple steps to ensure that your pizza has Keto toppings, or that the chili or enchiladas you prepare are full of high-fat foods. Thanks to the popularity of the Keto diet, it’s also easy to find recipes andsolutions online.

The Benefits
For proper growth, children need a high amount of iron and fat in their diet anyways, as these are important for brain development. Healthy ketogenic foods have a lot of both iron and fat. The Keto diet also focuses on foods that are free of refined carbs and additives. By cutting out refined and high-carb foods, you can also reduce your child’s
risk for diabetes or obesity.

Cons

There Are Side Effects
As with any change in diet, there are side effects that come with starting the Keto diet. A lot of people experience dizziness or drowsiness, and they frequently urinate or have diarrhea.

It can take a while for anyone to get used to ketosis, especially children. Make sure you’re regulating how they’re feeling and what kind of side effects are impacting them. Incorporating the Keto diet should be a slow, easy-going process so you can keep track of all of its impacts.

Children Can Be Picky
Any restricted diet for children can be tough to take on. It can be a big struggle to get your kids to eat healthy foods in general– let alone the foods for a Keto diet. You can also run the risk of preventing your child from developing a healthy relationship with food, if you restrict and enforce their diet too much. Try to use a positive, encouraging attitude and use this as an opportunity to teach your child about healthy lifestyles, how food affects not only our bodies but also our mental health, and to empower them to make good choices.

The Ketogenic diet is completely safe for your children; indeed, it was created for children in hospitals. It provides the same health benefits for young children as it does for adults, and includes lots of foods that kids love or that you already prepare for the family dinner table. Make sure you’re aware of the side effects of putting your children on a different eating plan, and understand it’ll be a long adjustment as they get used to their Keto diets.
