Humans are creatures of habit, if you think about and write down your daily routine, there will be a pattern of behavior and tasks you regularly do, some of which may be bad for you. Unless you make a conscious decision to change these, everything will stay the same. Two habits that affect your health are junk food and smoking. Unfortunately, some people attempt to adopt a ‘crash diet’ mentality to these habits, meaning instead of making gradual changes, you might decide to stop smoking, for instance, all at once. See below for alternatives on how to wean off these habits to improve your health for good.

Smoking
We know that smoking is bad for your health, but the habit you’ve adopted will not allow you to give in (along with the dose of nicotine that keeps you hooked). Smoking may be your vice for the association people link to it of de-stressing.

Taking a few deep breaths and watching the smoke dissipate can be quite relaxing for some. In this situation the key is not to attempt to stop smoking all at once, as with crash diets, this will result in unbearable cravings, causing you to snap and fall right back into the same pattern.

Instead consider alternatives, such as vaping by looking at different e juice samples, you still have the same actions as you would smoking a real cigarette, but in some juices, there is less of a health risk. You can opt for a less amount of nicotine, and it has a pleasant taste and smell which makes it a better alternative to enable you to stop smoking for good.

Junk Food
We are all guilty at one point or another for indulging in junk food, it’s obviously not any use to your health but sometimes it tastes so good its hard to resist. If you’re guilty of ordering multiple takeaways a week or snacking on chocolate, crisps, and sweets, you might be searching for ways to cut this down and replace the junk with nourishing food for your body.

There are a few advantages for buying junk food that make it easy to develop into a habit. For instance, it’s usually prepared and cooked for you or readily available to eat from its packaging. This saves us the time needed to cook from scratch and could be one of the reasons why it’s so easy to keep eating junk food.

If the time it takes to think of what to eat and cook seem to be your primary reason for buying junk food, you could take a day out to prepare and cook food for the whole week. Having healthy food readily available to eat will prevent you from contacting your local Chinese takeaway as often. Making gradual adjustments will be more effective and sustainable to build upon than telling yourself just to cut out junk food all at once.

Looking at the habits for smoking and junk food above, the way to control your habit and help you quit for good is to start making small alterations, as opposed to stopping altogether. This will enable your change of habit to be gradual and avoid relapsing into your old ways.
