Health is one of those things that it’s easy to take for granted- until something goes wrong. Being proactive about your health means you’re taking steps to prevent certain illnesses and diseases from occurring or advancing- and since a huge portion of deaths are accounted to preventable causes, it’s something we should all be doing. Here are some simple ways we can all look after ourselves more.

Take supplements

Supplements are not an alternative to a healthy diet, you should still be eating well every day. This means getting at least five portions of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean dairy and enough protein. However, supplements can ensure that you’re not missing out on anything, they’re not expensive and easy to fit into your daily routine. Swallow down a pill after breakfast, lunch or dinner and you’re safe in the knowledge that you’re not low on any nutrients. A general multivitamin should do the trick, if you’re a woman of childbearing age, choose a tablet that has 400micrograms of folic acid. This is because if you fall pregnant, it prevents issues with the baby’s spine and neural tubes which can result in a lack of folate in the diet. Getting enough folate, even with a very healthy diet can be tricky, which is why a tablet is recommended.

Give up your dangerous vices

Smoking, binge drinking, taking illicit drugs, you’ll already know that these things are incredibly bad for you. Seriously consider quitting, get help if you’re struggling with addiction as you’re much more likely to break habits with professional support. If you’re around people that influence you in negative ways, it could also be worth evaluating your friendship circle. Make friends with people who want to do more in life than drink, smoke or take drugs and enjoy other activities that are good for both the mind and body. Hobbies, traveling and doing new things will all benefit you, and show you that you don’t need to rely on alcohol or drugs to have a good time.

Attend all of your appointments

Don’t wait until you’re having problems to visit the doctor, dentist, option or hearing clinic. Each time they send you reminders about screenings, be sure to go along even if you feel fine. These appointments can help to pick up problems at the earliest and most treatable stage, you don’t want to wait until you’re reliant on hearing aids, in a lot of pain or cant see to seek help! Even if things are fine, you have peace of mind knowing that your health is ok, and you’re doing what you can to stay on top of things.

How do you keep on top of your health, and ensure you’re taking steps to achieving better health and wellbeing?
