In a world full of suffering, loss, and poverty, nothing quite beats hearing about an act of kindness. It sounds very cliché, but life is too short to sit back and not at least attempt to be a better version of yourself and if you already are, good on you! Sometimes a life-changing event can provoke someone into changing their lifestyle, their habits, and even the way they view life. So if you’re looking for a way to improve who you are as a person and ultimately, the way you feel about yourself, take a look at these empowering ways to become a better person so that you and everyone’s life that you touch can benefit from the new you.

Let go of stress

We all feel stressed from time to time, and that’s totally normal. Uncontrolled stress, however, can put a strain on relationships and even your health. If not treated, it can lead to more stress and yep, you guessed it, more problems which can keep you from being the best version of yourself.

While stress isn’t always something you can help, it’s important to find ways of relieving your stress so that you don’t inadvertently take it out on your health and others around you. Here are some fantastic and proven ways of letting go of stress effectively:

  • Breathe! It sounds simple, but breathing techniques can dramatically reduce your stress levels, leaving you feeling calmer and able to face your problems head-on.
  • Eating a healthy and balanced diet will help reduce stress levels. Did you know that junk food messes with the chemical balance in your brain which in turn, can lead to all kinds of mental health problems? Eating a healthier diet will help reverse this effect.
  • Working out what your triggers are and avoid them as much as possible.
  • Practicing stress relievers like meditation can also help you train your mind on how to react to stressful situations.

It’s easier said than done, we know. However, letting go of stress and rising above the problems in your life will empower you and in turn, make you a better version of yourself.

Support others

A phrase that’s commonly used around the world when someone is feeling low is to remember that there’s ‘always someone worse off than you’. As sad as this fact is, it’s probably true. Use this kind of mindset and put into action a plan to help others that are less fortunate than you. For example:

A couple has been trying to conceive for years with no avail and has decided to turn towards different methods of becoming parents. Egg donation can completely turn their lives around! Donating your eggs can be a difficult process, but imagine the joy that you could be bringing into someone’s life!

Of course, there are other ways in which you can support others such as:

  • Visiting sick children in the hospital and spending time with them.
  • Reading to the elderly.
  • Donating money to a great cause.
  • Adopting abandoned animals and turning their lives around.
  • Handing out blankets, pillows, and dry food for the homeless so that they can stay warm and have a meal, on you.

Supporting others is one of the most empowering things that you can do and not just because you feel good, but because you make others feel good too. Support others and the return you’ll get will be amazing.

Look after yourself!

A mistake that many people make when trying to better themselves is forgetting to actually take care of their health, both mentally and physically. We mentioned earlier how you can relieve stress, but you should also be doing these things for your health too:

  • Exercising regularly. Exercise is anything that gets your heart rate up and makes you feel slightly out of breath. So whether you’re at the gym pumping iron, or doing the housework at super speed, as long as you’re upping your heart rate you’re exercising. However, for an effective exercise regime, you might want to consider hiring a personal trainer to help you reach your goals.
  • Retraining your brain’s relationship with food. It’s a little known fact that the majority of the earth’s population actually has an unhealthy relationship with food. While it’s important to eat a balanced diet, you should be upping your water intake, only eating when truly hungry, and also only eating small portions. You can find out more about the eating habits you’re doing wrong using 12 weeks to wow.
  • Give yourself time to relax. We all live busy lifestyles and between work, school runs, cooking dinner and housework, it’s easy to forget about time to relax your body and mind. Find a relaxing activity that allows your mind to wander and your body to relax too. Perhaps slipping off for a long soak in the bath once the kids are in bed is exactly what you need!

Looking after yourself not only gives you the ability to achieve your goal of becoming a better person but empowers you into being the best version of yourself too!

Challenge yourself daily

There’s nothing quite like a personal challenge, whether it be to walk to work faster than ever or to cut out caffeine from your day completely, challenging yourself daily will help you become a better person. Achieving even the smallest challenges that you’ve set yourself is extremely empowering and encourages you to challenge yourself again.

Set a long term goal

While challenging yourself daily is a great way of keeping yourself on your toes, setting a long term goal is a fantastic way of focusing your mind into achieving your dreams. Always wanted to climb Kilimanjaro? Put yourself through training and sign yourself up for it! The only way you’re going to achieve your goals is by taking that all-important scary first step. Set a long term goal so that you’ve got something to work towards because when you do, you’ll experience empowerment like never before!

Donate time, not money

Being a better person doesn’t always mean dipping your hand into your pocket for those less fortunate. You can still help others even if you don’t have a dime to spare! Donating your time rather than money can often mean more to those affected than simply having money thrown at them. Volunteer in women’s refuges, feed the hungry in shelters, pick up litter, or clear the oceans of plastic. Whatever you decide to donate your time to, we promise you won’t regret it!

Speak out for those who can’t

The feeling of empowerment often comes from doing something selfless for someone or something, so why not do exactly that? Speak out and take action for those that can’t such as abused animals, children, and even women who are victims of domestic violence. Or perhaps you could take lead in a charity cause speaking out for people who are suffering instead.

Finally, on the road to becoming a better person, it’s important to find the ability to forgive those that have wronged you in the past. Of course, there are some circumstances where this isn’t possible, but if you truly want to find a way of becoming a better person and feel empowered at the same time, let go of the past!
