After discovering you’re pregnant, your emotions will go into overdrive. Even without taking your fluctuating hormones into account, you will experience excitement one day, fear the next, and for the purposes of this article, oodles and oodles of stress. Pregnancy can be a joy, but with morning sickness, aches and pains, and interfering busybodies offering you conflicting advice, it can also place a strain on your sanity levels.
Worry not. While we can’t predict what your pregnancy will be like, and while we don’t know the particular stresses that might personally affect you, we can give you a few general tips to benefit your mental health.
#1: Get a good night’s sleep
This is easier said than done while pregnant, we know. If your head is full of worries when you hit the pillow, you might stay awake for hours dwelling on them. And if you have back pain or muscle cramps as a result of the pregnancy, you might be too uncomfortable to get to sleep anyway. However, you must try, because you will be better equipped to deal with your various stresses when you’re awake.
To deal with your worries, make it a practice to write them down before attempting to get some shut-eye. Your concerns won’t go away, but by getting them out of your head and onto paper, you might have the opportunity to rest easier. You can then research your concerns in the morning when you are fully rested, although you might find in the cold light of day, that some of your worries were insignificant anyway. And when it comes to your aches and pains, you might want to invest in a pregnancy pillow, as these are specially designed to fit the contour of your body, and to alleviate the aches that circulate around your body. You might even get your partner to give you a much-needed massage before you go to sleep, as that will not only relieve your stress and help you get some shut-eye, but it will help your partner too when he doesn’t have to put up with you tossing and turning into the early hours.
#2: Buy something to make your pregnancy easier
Aside from the pregnancy pillow we advocated above, there are other products that can make your life easier during your pregnancy. You might want to buy a support belt, for example, as this can make you feel more comfortable during the last couple of months when you’re experiencing joint pain. We also recommend a massaging water bottle to both relieve back pains and any stress you might be feeling. And when it comes to the last trimester of your pregnancy, and you’re getting stressed over your labor pains, you should use Bloomlife to time contractions, and to test whether what you’re going through are Braxton Hicks contractions or actual signs of labor. Get your credit card out, and as well as stocking up on diapers, baby clothes, and any of your other post-pregnancy essentials, research and purchase anything else that is guaranteed to give you an easier and less stressful time during your pregnancy.
#3: Eat something healthy
You need to be mindful when pregnant, because thanks to your cravings, you might be tempted to reach for those foods that aren’t particularly good for you. This won’t help your stress levels any, because despite the satisfaction of eating something to soothe your cravings, both your physical and your mental health might suffer as a consequence. You might not be helping your baby either, so remember that when you’re tempted to eat something unhealthy. To help you, these are the foods to include and ignore in your diet. By eating a healthy balanced diet, and by cutting down on anything that could be considered harmful, you will both protect the health and wellbeing of yourself and your baby, and boost your energy levels, giving you the better capacity to cope with the strains and pressures of your pregnancy.
#4: Don’t forget to exercise
There will be times when exercise will be the last thing on your mind. When you feel bloated and exhausted, you might prefer a sit down with a cup of tea and an afternoon in front of the television. And while this is fine; taking time to relax will also help you stay mentally strong, know that you should make the effort to work out occasionally. Not only will gentle exercise preserve the physical health of you and your baby, but it will also enable you to burn away any stress that may have been plaguing you. These are the exercise examples you might want to focus on, but for a safer pregnancy, go at a gentle pace, and consult your doctor for professional advice on the exercise limits you need to place on yourself.
You will get stressed while you’re pregnant, and this is completely normal. However, you can alleviate some of your stress by following our suggestions, so be sure to abide by them during your pregnancy. We would love to tell you that your stress will melt away after your baby is born, but we both know this isn’t true! Still, once you have your little one in your arms, much of the stress you felt beforehand will melt away as you recognize the blessing you now have in your life. Remember that when the temper tantrums, sleepless nights, and baby expenses threaten to overwhelm you, but we will deal with those stresses in another article sometime.
