Is Your Job Making You Sick?

Do you feel physically worn down by work? Getting pains and aches around your body that you never had before? It’s possible that your job could be to blame.

Many health problems can stem from stress, repetition and poor conditions in the workplace. Here are just several common health problems that could stem from work-related activities and what you can do to protect yourself against them.

Back pain

Back problems are often the result of poor posture. Bending instead of crouching when lifting heavy objects is a common way in which people injure their back. Craning over a desk can also cause lower back pain – lowering your chair or raising your desk could prevent this.

It’s possible to slow down and even reverse many back problems by improving one’s posture. You may be able to get advice from a chiropractor, as well as treatments such as massages and manipulation. Meanwhile, you can prevent inflammation in your back by upping your personal comfort – taking a bath, upgrading your mattress and choosing a more comfortable chair could all help to ease the pain.

Wrist cramps

Cramping in the wrist is often a sign of an RSI (repetitive strain injury). This could be caused by writing, typing or using power tools regularly. Whilst cramps may at first be temporary, they could become permanent – this could be a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome.

There are three rules to follow to avoid wrist aches: 1) try not to overextend your wrist regularly. 2) Avoid using tools that vibrate a lot. 3) Keep your elbows horizontal to your hands when typing. Relieving cramps can be difficult but there are treatments available such as carpal tunnel release surgery.

Weight gain

A lot of people with sedentary jobs can gain weight due to a lack of exercise. Whilst this itself may not seem like a form of illness, it can increase the risk of other health problems such as diabetes and joint issues.

By making efforts to be more active throughout your day, you may be able to prevent weight gain. This could include being active on your lunch break or exercising more out of working hours.   

Eye strain

Achy and itchy eyes could be the result of staring at a PC screen for too long. This could be particularly the case when using a bright screen in a dimly lit room.

Taking steps to adjust the brightness of your screen could help to reduce strain. It’s worth also giving your eyes a regular break when working on a computer.

Headaches

Headaches and eye strain can come hand in hand, often as the result of staring at a bright screen. However, there can be many other work-related causes of headaches. Stress is a common trigger, as is coffee. Some people can even get weekend headaches simply from abandoning a work routine of getting up early.

If you’re getting regular headaches, record each one and try to recall the activities prior to see if you can spot any trends. By knowing the trigger you may be able to avoid it and avoid future headaches.

Exhaustion

Exhaustion could be the result of chronic stress. When stressed, our mind becomes alert, our muscles tense and our blood pressure goes up. Such stress can be health in certain situations, but over a sustained period of time it can be draining on the body. Make sure to destress at the end of each day with activities such as exercise, meditation or taking a hot bath. 

Exhaustion could also be the result of burning the candle at both ends, which could also be work related. Make sure that your job isn’t affecting your sleep and that you’re working sensible hours.

Skin irritation

Handling certain chemicals regularly without gloves could lead to skin irritation on the hands. You should always follow health and safety guides when handling such as liquids – this may be outlined on the side of the bottle.

Unclean equipment could also be a cause of skin irritation. Unwashed hard hats can often lead to bacterial problems on the scalp. By making sure your equipment is cleaned you could avoid this skin issue. There are creams available for conditions such as psoriasis.

Hearing loss

Hearing loss is often caused by loud noise exposure. Work environments such as night clubs and construction sites are common places to find such levels of noise and you should ideally wear ear protection to prevent damage. Providing ear protection could be the responsibility of your employer, which is something to look into first. Factors like stress can also contribute to hearing loss.

Breathing difficulties

Poor air quality could be making you sick. Many lung conditions such as mesothelioma can be the result of breathing in toxic chemicals like asbestos. A good workplace should put in measures to avoid breathing in these toxins such as wearing a mask.

Breathing difficulties can be serious and you may need to see a doctor to get an official diagnosis. Chest pain

Chest pain is never a good sign in any circumstance. Whilst there are many possible diagnoses and causes of chest pain, the most likely is heart disease – which is often caused by stress.

If you suspect you may heart disease, it could be worth seeing a doctor who will be able to recommend lifestyle changes and possibly offer medication. Taking up destressing activities such as meditation or taking hot baths could help.
