Being a stay at home parent is a full-time job. Making sure that your kids are happy and healthy and they’re always safe is one of the best ways that you can spend your life but you’re sacrificing a lot. I’ve had to give up your career for a while at least, and a lot of the social activities that I used to enjoy went out the window. It can sometimes feel like my entire life revolves around being a parent and I’ve lost my own personality and independence. But being a parent doesn’t have to mean that I’m not my own person still. If you feel like you’ve lost sight of who you are, here are some ways that you can regain your independence.

Make Your Own Money

One of the main reasons that I feel as though I’ve lost my independence is because I’m not working and my spouse brings in all of the money. Obviously, I’m still contributing to the household by looking after the family but earning my own money is a big help. If you feel the same, you should try to find some way of bringing in a bit of extra cash that you can spend for yourself. There are all sorts of ways that you can earn a bit of extra money on the side. You could consider blogging to earn money, or even get a part time job once the kids have started school. It doesn’t have to be a lot of money, it’s more of a symbolic gesture that helps you regain control over your life.

Continue Education

Sometimes, I feel like other people are growing and improving while I’m at home looking after the kids. Of course, I am still growing as a person because I’m always learning new things and helping my kids, but sometimes I feel like I want to do something just for me. That’s where education comes in. You’re probably thinking that it’s not possible for you to go back to college. I don’t have the time for that and I guess you don’t either. But that doesn’t mean you can’t carry on learning. There are so many great online degrees these days, in all sorts of subjects. You can do anything from a business degree to a masters of engineering management online. The beauty of doing a degree online is that you can do it at your own pace whenever you have the time. If you’re like me, you’ve probably only got a spare hour here or there but that’s still enough.

Get A Hobby

Before I was a parent, there were all sorts of things that I used to enjoy doing in my spare time. But as soon as that first baby arrived, I forgot all about my old hobbies. There just wasn’t time to do anything fun for myself anymore. You probably felt the same, but when the kids get a bit older, you’ll be able to find that time. In the evenings, once your partner is home from work, you can always find an hour or two spare. Use that time to pick up one of your old hobbies and you’ll feel a lot more like yourself.

Being a stay at home parent doesn’t have to consume your entire identity. You can always find the time to be your own person.
